At the request of the Limburg governor, a preliminary study is being conducted on the possibilities and feasibility of a merger between the police zones Sint-Truiden-Gingelom-Nieuwerkerken, Canton Borgloon, Tongeren-Herstappe and possibly also the police zone Bilzen-Hoeselt-Riemst. This project aims to gain a better understanding of the revenue and expenditure of the police. Furthermore, it is directed to the formulation of recommendations through which the connection between the local security policy and the budget can be increased. Finally, the project will result in a renewed federal funding mechanism. We outline below the proposed research in three separate sections.

In this research, commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior, we studied: (1) which tasks and activities basic police care implies, (2)whichever stabile and relative unchanging objective environmental variables are influencing these tasks and activities and (3) what’s the minimum operational capacity arising from this exercise.

The purpose of this research is to portray the (non) existing forms of cooperation between police zones and testing the willingness of the officers of the police, the mayors and the captains, to participate in a process of more advanced cooperation or of scale enlargement.
