When accessibility meets multimedia learning: Effect of intralingual live subtitling on perception, performance and cognitive load in an EMI university lecture. University of Antwerp
The protective effect of physical activity on older adults’ daily cognitive performance and the mediating role of sleep and mental wellbeing Ghent University
This project aims to investigate whether physical activity benefits older adults’ daily cognitive performance and whether this relation is mediated by improved sleep and better mental wellbeing. To answer this research question an observational as well as an interventional study, using objective and high-quality measurements to assess the parameters, will be carried out.
PACTA-study (Physical Activity, CogniTion and Aging): A longitudinal investigation of the relation between type and dose of physical activity and cognitive decline in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment KU Leuven
Dementia currently affects more than 47 million people worldwide, is forecasted to triple by 2050 and is one of the most costly disorders in Belgium. There is good scientific evidence that the cognitive impairments associated with the development of dementia can be lessened or even reversed because of the plasticity of the brain (rewiring). Recent research has shown that engaging in regular physical activity combined with performing ...

Quantifying ageing related cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment KU Leuven
University of Ljubljana, located in a low R&I performing country, will partner with two internationally-leading organisations, the Medical University of Graz and KU Leuven, to expand the support and coordination capacity for national and European research in ageing-related decrease in brain functions leading to dementia. By 2025 more than 25% of European population will be over 60 years old, with people over 80 increasing most rapidly. ...
Physical Activity for CognitivE health: investigating the Underlying causal Pathways (PACE-UP project) Ghent University
As the share of older adults is growing at a high pace, so is the number of people living with cognitive decline. To reduce the prevalence of cognitive decline, research on healthy cognitive ageing is needed. Among older adults, engaging in physical activity is positively associated with maintenance of optimal cognitive functioning. Nevertheless, the underlying pathways via which physical activity influences older adults’ cognitive ...
Cognitive flexibility: modulation of prefrontal-hippocampal network activation. KU Leuven
Cognitive flexibility refers to the ability to adjust one’s behaviour adaptively in response to changes in the environment. An adaptive response involves different concomitant components, including attention to contingency changes, inhibition of previous responses, and acquisition of new strategies. In this thesis, we aimed to broaden the general neurochemical and neuroanatomical knowledge of cognitive flexibility. To achieve this purpose, we ...
Investigating the impact of conversational and cognitive strategic support for promoting secondary school students’ argumentative writing: Experimental studies in authentic classrooms Ghent University
More than ever, effective writing and proficient argumentation are imperative for full participation
in our 21st century society. This proposal combines both, as prior (inter)national findings call
attention to the fact that secondary school students’ writing, and argumentative writing in
particular, is inadequately developed. Therefore, the main aim is to gain insight in how to support all
secondary students ...
