Steven Debbaut

Onderzoeksexpertise (Vrije Universiteit Brussel):
I am a postdoctoral researcher in Criminology with a broad interest in drug policy, encompassing the study of drug discourses, the legitimacy of criminalising substances, and the institutional practices of law enforcement. My research combines historical, philosophical, and empirical perspectives to examine how societal norms, public policy, and policing practices intersect in shaping the governance of drugs. I have published extensively on policing and drug policy, with a particular focus on how legitimacy is constructed within enforcement practices.
Before my academic career, I worked in drug addiction counseling, youth supervision, socio-economic policy, and served as a lecturer in Social Work.
