Gender and power in the European Parliament

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Ondertitel:intersectional and transnational practicing of citizenship
Korte inhoud:The European Parliament (EP) is a particular transnational site for exercising citizenship, and a space of multiple intersections of overlapping social groups. This chapter combines intersectionality with power perspectives with the aim of addressing citizenship practices, that is, discrimination and inequality in recognition, representation, and participation, in the EP as a transnational and intersectional political site. It argues that a power approach to citizenship practices helps disentangle the production and reproduction of hampered transnational and intersectional citizenship practices in Europe and helps us reflect on how to overcome them. Throughout the chapter, it takes a close look at the functioning of the EP as a site of transnational intersectional citizenship practicing, showing that there is little space for true intersectionality. There is formal commitment to equality, and the recognition of diversity, but implementation is another issue. Furthermore, the functioning itself of the EP reveals power dynamics at play, leading to a lack of recognition, representation, and participation of many intersections or specific groups, also in terms of their possibilities of empowerment in practice.
