Lodewijk XIV als spelverdeler in de Spaanse successie, 1707-1708

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Korte inhoud:The war of the Spanish Succession (1702-1713/1714) has traditionally been presented as the painful settling of a balance of power for the ensuing peaceful decades, thanks to major victories, achieved by ‘Great Men’ in the allied camp. Yet, French military and diplomatic strategy has hitherto received insufficient attention. Rich archival sources on the 1707 and 1708 campaigns in Flanders, the most visible military theatre, allow us to clarify the more political than military behaviour of Louis XIV’ commanders Vendôme and Bourgogne, to link indecisive campaigns of attrition to wintertime diplomatic negotiations conducted in The Hague and, finally, to explain a shift in legal discourse, accompanying the transformation of the political battle on the partition of the Spanish Empire.
