Building Brussels

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Ondertitel:Een interdisciplinair onderzoek naar de Brusselse bouwsector, 1795-2015
The interdisciplinary research project 'Building Brussels', which started at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in October 2016, wants to underpin the recent debate on the importance of small ‘productive’ activities in the city by examining the long-term (19th-21st century) viability of SMEs in the Brussels’ construction industry from a business-historical, architectural and socio-economic-geographical perspective. The research departs from the hypothesis that small construction companies have persistently played a crucial role in the production and maintenance of the urban space. Based on an in-depth interdisciplinary research of a multitude of both historical and contemporary data on these small but crucial economic actors, 'Building Brussels' aims to investigate how locally anchored and locally organized they could satisfy this need and can continue to do so in the future.
