Modelling the effect of coarse recycled concrete aggregate on compressive strength of Portland cement concrete using volume fraction-based approach

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

Many studies have shown that the quality and quantity of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) strongly affect the compressive strength of concrete; however, existing quantitative conclusions on that effect vary largely, which hinders the practical valorisation of RCA. This paper aims to model the effect of coarse RCA on the 28-day compressive strength of Portland cement concrete with strength classes from C20/25 to C80/95. Firstly, a systematic laboratory test programme is carried out to compensate for the scarce data in the literature, which involves an industrially produced high-quality coarse RCA and a total of 28 high-strength high-performance concrete mixtures. Secondly, a database is developed using data from 29 international publications and the present study. Finally, using the quality class and volume fraction of coarse RCA as well as the strength class of reference concrete as variables, a new model is developed for quantitatively describing the effect of coarse RCA on the compressive strength of concrete. The proposed model provides a satisfactory description of test observations.
