Project

Building capacity for research on febrile illness in children and adults in DRC

Febrile illness represents the most frequent and challenging clinical syndrome in the Tropics.
The current and evolving epidemiology of febrile illness in DRC has to be better documented,
in particular in children most at risk of adverse outcome, in order to optimize the clinical
management. For this purpose we plan to setup a prospective observational study on febrile
illness in children and adults, at 2 - newly to establish – research sites (1 urban, 1 rural) in
DRC. This study will lay the first epidemiological foundations for highly needed subsequent
research on improved diagnostic strategies and ultimately better management for febrile illness
in sub-Saharan Africa. The main funder of the project is the Belgian Development Cooperation.
The support given by the Fund Poelmans-Van Meulder, managed by the King Baudouin
Foundation, will be used to buy essential medicines for the treatment of children from
vulnerable groups and poor families, who present at the study sites.
