Korte inhoud:This article focuses on the production of gender norms and calls for studies that comprehend these norms in their ethnographic diversity, beyond the usual dualisms that oppose “East” and “West” or “Islam” and “secularism.” This cross-reflection based on two research projects conducted in Arab countries—one on love and desire in Cairo and the other on the negotiation of land rights in Morocco—shows how the author’s interlocutors reconcile apparently incompatible and contradictory referents in order to produce their own normative explanations and justifications on gender relations and to defend what they consider general or even universal assessments.
