Experimental philosophy of medical explanation : why and how should we do it?

Boekbijdrage - Hoofdstuk

Korte inhoud:The aim of this chapter is to understand why experimental philosophy of medical explanation can be important and to elaborate how it should be done to be philosophically interesting. It is structured around three theses. First: experimental philosophy of scientific explanation can legitimize normative philosophy of scientific explanation. Second: normative philosophy of scientific explanation can in turn establish the significance of the results of experimental philosophy of scientific explanation. The third thesis is the integrated application of theses 1 and 2 to medical explanation as a subclass of scientific explanation: Experimental philosophy of medical explanation and normative philosophy of medical explanation can benefit from each other. The former can legitimize the latter, while the latter can establish the significance of the results of the former. We elaborate two medical cases to support this conclusion: risk factor knowledge and genetic explanations of diseases.
