Enhancing the educational and social efficiency of the transition between primary and secondary education. innovations for the field (transbaso)

Boekbijdrage - Boekabstract Conferentiebijdrage

Transbaso is an innovative valorization and research project for the Flemish education context. That school and study orientation processes are socially biased is well documented. Each selective moment in the educational career of children acts as a social threshold. One of the first crucial thresholds in the Flemish system is the transition from primary to secondary education. However, little is known about these processes themselves and about the effectiveness of interventions as well as the dynamic interactions between the different stakeholders. Transbaso is extremely relevant both from a social and economic perspective. Socially biased study and school orientation processes lead to social inequality, but also to misallocation of human capital and to a structural loss of economic added value. This leads many stakeholders (from school-principals, over civil society and economic advocacy organizations, to the Flemish Ministry of Education) to perceive Transbaso as indispensable applied research, if we want to keep Flemish education at the international top. Transbaso is a project funded by IWT (Institute for Innovation by Science and Technology). Several partners are involved in the project and carry out the project (Ghent University, Free University of Brussels, University of Antwerp, University College Antwerp, University College Ghent).
