Effect of ionizing radiation on solvent extraction systems for the separation of minor actinides KU Leuven
Minor actinides and long living fission products, are largely responsible for the radiotoxicity and heat production of spent nuclear fuel on the long term. During the last decades, significant scientific and technical progress has been made in Europe for R&D on the selective extraction of minor actinides from spent fuel. This task was made challenging by the chemical similarity of actinides and lanthanides, but also by their unfavourable ...
Laser Spectroscopy of Actinides: Octupole Deformation and Gas-Jet Characterization KU Leuven
Elise Verstraelen her PhD thesis reports on a laser spectroscopy study in the actinide region and covers three main topics. Firstly, the results on in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy of the neutron-rich actinium isotopes 225-229Ac are detailed. These measurements were performed at the TRIUMF ISAC facility in Vancouver and resulted in new data on the changes in mean-square charge radii and the magnetic dipole moments of isotopes ...
Radiation resistant ionic liquids for the separation of minor actinides KU Leuven
The project foresees the synthesis of novel radiation-resistant hydrophobic ionic liquids to be used for the extraction of minor actinides from acidic aqueous solutions. The importance of elaborating a separation scheme based on ionic liquids is substantiated by the fact, that currently the presence of the long-lived minor actinides pose a major obstacle in finding a soothing method for final disposal of reprocessed nuclear fuel waste. In the ...
Ising exchange interaction in lanthanides and actinides KU Leuven
© 2015 IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. The Ising exchange interaction is a limiting case of strong exchange anisotropy and represents a key property of many magnetic materials. Here we find the necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve Ising exchange interaction for metal sites with unquenched orbital moments. Contrary to current views, the rules established here narrow much the range of lanthanide and actinide ...
Lanthanides and Actinides in Ionic Liquids KU Leuven
Ionic liquids are solvents that consist entirely of ions. These nonvolatile and nonflammable solvents offer interesting opportunities for lanthanide and actinide chemistry. They can replace the organic phase in solvent extraction systems and can be used as nonaqueous electrolytes for electrodeposition of metals. Ionic liquids could find applications in the nuclear fuel cycle. Lanthanide coordination compounds or lanthanide-containing ...
Selective extraction of trivalent actinides using CyMe4BTPhen in the ionic liquid Aliquat-336 nitrate KU Leuven
The extraction of Am(iii), Cm(iii) and Eu(iii) by 2,9-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-3-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (CyMe4BTPhen) from nitric acid solution was studied using the ionic liquid Aliquat-336 nitrate ([A336][NO3]) as diluent. Results show a high selectivity of the solvent for Am(iii) and Cm(iii) over Eu(iii), but rather slow extraction kinetics. The kinetics of CyMe4BTPhen were largely improved by the ...
Electron correlation effects reflected in thermodynamic properties of light actinides Universiteit Antwerpen
Experimentally available thermodynamic data on the light actinides is used to display the ratio B Omega=k(B)T(m) from Th through to Cm. Dramatic variation through the series by a factor of 4 contrasts strongly with that found for the five heavy rare earth solids, also involving f-electrons, where the same ratio is approximately 50 to within a few percent.

On the limitations of the DFT plus U approach to energetics of actinides Universiteit Antwerpen
Scalar-relativistic density functional theory calculations are performed on three phases of Np within the framework of LSDA+U approach. Material properties examined include lattice parameters, atomic volumes, bulk modulus, magnetic moments, and cohesive energies. Dependence of these properties as a function of the Hubbard-type Coulomb U parameter is investigated, and it is observed that beyond the optimized value at which resulting properties ...
