Creating Harmony Between Prosthesis, User and Control Theory Ghent University
Lower limb amputations often severely restrict patients when trying to perform activities of daily living, even when using prostheses. Active lower limb prostheses are a promising alternative to the more common passive prostheses but even those still have significant limitations and shortcomings. This project aims to overcome a number of those limitations and shortcomings through the development of a novel control strategy for active lower ...

Design and development of a patient-specific CMC1 joint prosthesis KU Leuven
During this research project, a novel prosthesis for the first carpometacarpal joint will be developed by CADskills bv. By researching the design and materials of this innovative device, its functionality and safety will be optimized. We want to explore the possibility of making the design anatomically accurate and patient-specific, as opposed to existing prostheses on the market, in order to resolve occurring issues with these devices.
Artificial vision for the blind: design and fabrication of a high-resolution neural prosthesis for chronic stimulation of the visual cortex KU Leuven
Worldwide, there are as many visually impaired people as hearing impaired. Still, no high-technological solution exists for these people, comparable to cochlear implants. This project aims at filling this scientific knowledge gap, and relieving the clinical needs of these people, by the design of a visual cortical implant. A first step consists in the design and fabrication of a high-resolution, biocompatible implant with thousands of ...

European Doctoral Network for Neural Prostheses and Brain Research KU Leuven
DONUT, European Doctoral Network for Neural Prostheses and Brain Research has the mission to provide a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral network for young talented researchers. The ambition of the project is to serve as a springboard for the expansion of EU partners into the fast-developing Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology and connected scientific disciplines. The DN will leverage the complementary expertise of 7 academic ...

Towards the development of next generation diagnostics and susceptibility testing in biofilm-related prosthetic joint infections Ghent University
We aim to optimize and validate relevant in vitro biofilm models by testing them with PJI clinical samples and isolates. Our findings will translate into innovative and clinical applicable approaches for a better diagnosis of PJIs and determination of antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the microorganisms involved in PJIs. To this end, we propose the following specific objectives:
(i) Further development and validation of an in ...
Influence of prosthetic design, alignment strategy and robotics on stability in total knee arthroplasty KU Leuven
The goal of this doctoral thesis is to investigate some important questions in the field of total knee arthroplasty: what is the influence of the prosthetic design (CR, PS, bicruciate retaining) on the stability of the knee? How can choosing the right prosthetic design and alignment method as well as the use of robotics aid in optimizing patient satisfaction? Different study designs (literature studies, cadaveric studies and clinical trials ...
