The present invention provides a continuous flow process and system for the preparation of metal-carbene complexes, comprising the use of a continuous flow reactor containing a solid weak base, such as K2CO3, allowing to obtain highly pure metal carbene complexes in high yield, at short reaction times and at mild reaction conditions.
