SILICON-on-insulator photonic wire technology allows for a substantial scaling in the size of photonic integrated circuits due to the high refractive index contrast that is available. Silicon waveguides with dimensions on the order of 500 nm by 200 nm allow for single mode propagation and tight optical con?nement. The high refractive index contrast makes the waveguide structures very polarization dependent however, which is an issue in many practical applications.
