In de roman Aardenburg (1817) van Petronella Moens wordt een fictionele door Nederlandse kolonisten bevolkte plaats in Zuid-Amerika omgedoopt tot ‘Aardenburg’, de naam van het stadje in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen waar de auteur opgroeide. Die lokale context klinkt ook door in de religieuze inhoud van de roman en dan met name in het motief van de volwassenendoop.
