Molecular Reclassification to Find Clinically Useful Biomarkers for Systemic Autoimmune Diseases KU Leuven
We concur to the IMI on “Reclassification of SLE, connective tissue diseases and RA” call by presenting a proposal aimed at using the power of OMICs, and bioinformatics to identify new classifications for diseases known to share common pathophysiological mechanisms. Such knowledge has not been applied to individual patients, depriving them from potential benefits in terms of the use of new therapeutic agents that are being developed for one ...
Tissue Engineering (TE) refers to the branch of medicine that aims to replace or regenerate functional tissue or organs using man-made living implants. As the field is moving towards more complex TE constructs with sophisticated functionalities, there is a lack of dedicated in vitro devices that allow testing the response of the complex construct as a whole, prior to implantation. Additionally, the knowledge accumulated from mechanistic and ...
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are formed through the expression of the transcription factor Foxp3 in T cells, resulting in the rewiring of the cell function into an immunosuppressive phenotype. Recently, it has been proposed that Tregs also have additional tissue-specific physiological roles when resident in different tissues. For example, tissue-specific Tregs residing in the muscle and adipose tissue possess immunological and non-immunological ...

KU Leuven
Uncovering Enteric GLIA-MACrophage communication in the intestinal homeostasis and inflammation. The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a network of neurons and enteric glial cells (EGCs) organized in ganglia essential to control gastrointestinal physiology. Although EGCs have historically been described as supporting cells for enteric neurons, recent data from my previous work and from my host group demonstrated that enteric glia is ...
EEN LAB-ON-A-CHIP APPARAAT VOOR ZUIVERE CIRCULATIE VAN TUMORCEL ISOLATIE VAN GEHEEL BLOED VOOR KANKERTHERAPIE (pureCTC) Vrije Universiteit Brussel
CTCs are rare cells that originate from tumors, and which travel in the human circulatory system to eventually spread the disease to other organs. Consequently, analysis of CTCs is crucial for ...
The post-acute phase (PAP) of COVID-19, occurring ≥4 months after the acute phase, is associated with an increased risk for the development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The risk of complications in this phase does not depend on the severity of the acute phase. In the EU, more than 183 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported and up to 70% of patients suffer reduced organ function in the PAP. Our conservative estimate it that 5% of ...
